Abenab is better known for its mining activities back in the early 1900`s. The mine was originally operated as an open-pit excavation from 1921 to 1947. Lead-zinc and vanadate were the primary minerals mined. The pit was mined to a depth of about 215m until reduced grades and the flow of underground water rendered further mining uneconomic. The mine officially closed in 1958.
Nestled in the picturesque surroundings of Grootfontein, Abenab farm and Lodge incorporates the old mine pit. Reclaimed by bush and vegetation, the shaft is 85% filled with water but steeped in history of pioneering mining activities and human feats. Located 24 km from Grootfontein and 40 km from Tsumeb, this lodge is an ideal stopover for travellers heading to top destinations like Etosha National Park, Hoba Meteorite, and Victoria Falls.
